New York City’s Fauna and me (2)

It’s nice to come back on the blog without having too much things to worry about. I am referring to my last exam … this week has been pretty intense because of the deadline, but I managed to do it on time. Even though I could have done better with more time available I am satisfied of the result… now it’s only a matter of waiting for the grades…brrrr.

However, it is also nice to come back and write about my second appointment with NYC’s fauna. Actually the animal I am going to write about in a second I have met it before I had the chance to met the squirrel, but I decided it was better to start with another animal.

The story starts in Manhattan, no, wait a second, the story starts in Staten Island. On a wednesday night, my cousin tells that sometimes, in the subway I could happen to meet some rat. The day after, I was still thinking about it and when I climbed down the stairs to reach the platform (I won’t discolse which station it was), I saw it! The rat. It was peacefully waddling on the rail lines, sniffing hither and thither in search for something undefined. I kept on looking at it, actually I was staring at it and at the people around who were perfectly calm and didn’t make it such a big deal as I was. I felt, and someone assured me I am not wrong, as they were and are considered as integrant part of the city: iddie kiddie (I am not sure if it should be written this way, tell me if I am wrong, thank you). Simply other livings accepted in the throbbing heart of NYC.

When I got on the train right some minute later (the rat had already found a shelter among the rail  lines), I saw the MTA advertisement against terrorism

LAST YEAR 1,944 NEW YORKERS SAW SOMETHING

AND SAID SOMETHING

After this encounter I am pretty sure New Yorkers didn’t say anything about their fellow citizens.

    A REAL NEWYORKER

EURO 2008

*Cough cough*, I think I can’t describe which embarassment my national team has given me during these last days… being the World Champions is not easy, and yet I had no real good feelings since the beginning. I don’t know what is going to happen on tuesday, but I hope the match to be a wonderful one.

In addition to this… tonight I have read an article on a famous italian newspaper’s website: www.gazzetta.it , here there were listed all the strangest and funniest things said in and about Euro 2008. Many of them made me laugh, other ones made me deeply think about the Italian team.

One of them is apparently a txt message sent by one player to a world champion who is now at home (and they are few)…, this message said: “We are in physical good conditions, but we enter in the field with fear”…

WHY?

New York City’s fauna and me (1)

In a week it will be one month I have been here in U.S.A…. and as I have already said, I am getting used to it. Yet, there are some things I cannot ignore and walk by, as many other new yorkers do: Squirrels.

In Italy we have squirrels for sure, but do not live near the populated areas, and neither they are so big an near to the man. The only squirrel I have ever seen in Italy had a black fur and was very small.

Here in New York, and I would say U.S.A., squirrels are very common. They go in the houses, ruin garbage bags, live in the parks, and me, I still have to get used to it!

Today, while I was walking to the subway station in Cadman Plaza, I suddenly stopped walking. I had just seen, with the corner of the eye, a big light brown tail on a tree: it was a squirrel! I grabbed the camera I always bring with me, and picked a picture. Then, after some second I realised the squirrel was on the wrong side of the street, on the opposite side of the Cadman Plaza Park is. So… I filmed a video…

This is New York City’s fauna and me (1), soon there will be the second chapter…, and I promise is a very interesting one.
